Sugar gliders are found all over Australia, New Guinea, Tasmania and several other associated isles, as well as Indonesia, and can thrive at up to 2000 m of altitude.
Their habitat consists of mostly rainforests and acacia scrub in Australia.
The population corresponds with the forest population.
First sugar glider fossils were found in a cave in Victoria and are believed to be up to 15 000 years old.
Their primary predators are owls, goannas and snakes.
